Alchemy was a process whereby someone enhanced the Pulse signature of a material thing, usually described as ‘increasing its virtue’ or ‘imbuing’. Many substances and combinations of substances were really material analogues of spiritual concepts; increasing the virtue of iron, for example, made iron ‘more like itself’: it became tougher and harder. Imbuing something with the properties of iron made things last longer, become more resistant to corruption, etc. A feather was an expression of the desire for flight, or freedom; an oil that used an imbued feather might have allowed the person to fly, or run like the wind. Typical alchemical items were applied to the skin or to an object (oils) or breathed (vapors).
