Community Content: Ned Basalt

Born in the year 166 in the Third Age of the Relic realm, Ned was one of the children of the extensive Basalt clan. He had a younger sister, Jozena Basalt, who was born a dwarf but had the indignity of changing to an aurora. His parents were still alive in the family Hold.

Early Years

Ned was a barbarian from the mountain ranges in the Great Expanse. As a rite of passage into mature dwarfhood, he had left the Hold to seek both experience and his fortune. He came to the city of Garris and soon found himself in the employ of the Fairfax family, acting as bodyguard, valet and minder for Count Fortie Fairfax. The young Count was a keen monster-hunter and being his bodyguard was a full-time job.

The Count was a bit of a looney, but his heart was in the right place. He killed monsters, which helps everyone. OK, so he has their heads stuffed and mounted on the wall, but this is fine compared to some noble’s hobbies on mindless brutality towards the peasantry.

Ned grew to like the excitement of the city and being in the employ of such a dynamic young noble. Although he kept in touch by letter with his family, he did not return home. He heard that his sister had become very, very ill. Jo was always a bit odd, but she’d lost the ability to walk through earth and manipulate earth ! This made it rather hard to walk to the dining room in the Basalt hold. Ned was fond of his little sister and kept in touch with her, but she was rather the family pariah.

Travelling Companions

Count Fortie Fairfax was Ned’s liege lord and close friend. Ned was his shield-man and common sense. Having said that, Ned was getting the thrill of monster-hunting and did compete (a little) with the Count for kills and trophies.

Jozena Basalt was Ned’s disgraced sister. As an aurora, she could no longer move around the family Hold easily and she was a major social upset for the clan. Ned was fond of his sister and thinks she had been treated terribly by the rest of the clan.

Agetha Maysey, Wisewoman was another of the Count’s entourage, the local midwife and wise woman. Agetha’s magical skills demanded respect despite her age. Her bear Carlen acted as her bodyguard

The Valon orator Quintus Aurelius joined the entourage in Garris. A hot-blooded young man, Ned does not understand half of what he’s saying, but at least he has his uses and most people like Quin.

Eleanor Snapdragon was a young trader woman, good with a bow and always in the right place at the right time. Elly again joined in Garris, helping to bring some child kidnappers to justice.

Prepared for travels ahead

Ned was short (he’s a dwarf) being a little over five foot in height. He was stocky, with rocky outcroppings on his shoulders, chest and knees. He was clean-shaven with very short fair hair. The rocks on him are granite with quartz outcroppings. It is not true that he has to shave with sandpaper.

He wore steel chainmail and kept his trusty sword, made in the forges of his hold as his favoured weapon.

Extra information

Ned Basalt

Ned was a solid warrior but had basic woodcraft skills as well. He naturally prefered working in rocky areas and was a competent outdoorsman.

His telesma was the focus of ‘bad luck’ for him. It was never clear why he’d not thrown it away – maybe he had, but it came back to him. It was a gemstone on an armband that was slowly fusing with his wrist.
