Community Content: Lin Huan

Lin Huan was born in Shanghai, China in 1971, became a Hero and then a Demigod, and was a key player in defeating the plans of the feral spirit Circa in her home city in 2048.

Early years

As the daughter of Communist Party officials Lin had a very privileged upbringing and was able to attend university in Beijing. She had a natural genius with computers and technology. In 1989 she found herself at Tianamen Square accompanying a friend from her dormitory. A young be-spectacled chinese woman, she was unprepared for the reaction of the authorities to the presence of the students demonstrating and found herself rounded up and interrogated as if she were one of the trouble makers behind the demonstration.

During her incarceration, Lin was tortured and branded by a sadistic young officer named Chen. In the days before her family connections were eventually able to track her down and free her, a new Lin was created from the horrors she was exposed to; a new Lin who had finally come up against wrongful authority and suffered beneath it, and would be willing to stand against it in the future. Surviving the torture initiated Lin into a wider tradition of symbols, codes and cyphers reaching from the mystical past of mankind into its technological future. After being released, with a paltry apology for mistaken identity, Lin outwardly continued her studies as before. She became a renowned computer scientist and cryptographer, completing her masters' degree in the USA, and was employed as part of the team that went on to build the great firewall of China.

In her personal life Lin became cold and controlled. She let no-one see the damage she had endured physically and emotionally, and always dressed immaculately in high necked long sleeved blouses and suits. Whilst working for the government in the day time she orchestrated schemes and plots against unjust government and criminal organisations in her home city - Shanghai.

Eventually she realised her heroic nature and went on to work with other heroic characters from the history of China. She visited future Shanghai and intalled subtle cyberware into her body to improve her control and communication with machines. Lin considered herself the organizer of the group, making sure they planned well ahead and didn't rush into unnecessary danger.

Travelling companions

After exploring the worlds connected to the Maelstrom, she ended up with a strange mixture of companions; all natives of Shanghai, although from different eras.

Huo Zangyu, also known as Zang: The captain was a very colorful character who put honor high on his list of virtues. Before or after that, came his love for shiny objects, golden trinkets and priceless gems. He was said to be from the 1700s when his war junk was well known in Chinese waters, or at least around Shanghai, for resisting foreign pirates and imperial fleets from the far occident. His junk was recreated in the Maelstrom where Zang and the other companions lived while in-between worlds. For a while, he was torn between serving Dragon of the Bund and Rat on Wharf, but knew in his heart that one day he would need to make his allegiances clear - gods are not known for their patience in the ways of mortals.

Su-Ming Sywan:Ming appeared to be a young adolescent girl, but her true age would occasionally show through when she did her part to mow down enemies of Shanghai with shockwaves from her mystical drum. Her abilities with spirits and healing were tactically vital to the group. Ming was friendly and warm and often struggled with the delayed effect of puberty on her body and emotions. She was a locally-born mystic who was dedicated to Crane on the Mountain.

Master Dzong?: The venerable master was from a much advanced time in history, born in the 26th century. He was also older than any of them, both in terms of his physical body and in the number of years he wandered the Maelstrom before joining up with the others. Still, though, he was a child of Shanghai, and a master of the martial arts. A vision of calm, it was always surprising for his companions to witness his actions when he was acting in a way to make his god proud... and Master Dzong was close friends with Temple Monkey, the practical joker of the local Shanghai gods.

Li Chun: Li was born in Shanghai, but grew up in a monestary far from people. There, she learned to control her extrodanary powers with the bow and arrow and learned the basics of martial arts. However, before she could complete her training, agents of Circa stormed her home and killed her master and the other students. Li was nursed back to health by Huo Zangyu, who found her on the mountain, and she has traveled with him and his companions ever since.

Prepared for the travels ahead

Lin Huan was the impeccably dressed organiser of the group. Even her cyberwear was subtle and rarely seen. She was often logical and hard and willing to make tough choices. The briefest mention of Officer Chen was sufficient to ruffle her calm exterior.

Her Telesma? was a smokey quartz that formed the body of an elegant silver spider. Lin wore it around her neck on a chain as a pendant. In the spirit world her Telesma had the feel of a furry spider, perhaps hinting at the hidden softer side of Lin.
