Logician-navigators

Garden of Athena is a far future realm of Suzerain, part of the Catalyst family of realms.

Logician-navigators were Logicians specialized in the extremely complicated calculations needed to direct the faster than light Crystal drive ships through the void.

Then need to do three dimensional triangulation, while factoring in time, gravity and speed as well as the mechanical limitation of the individual vessel made this type of navigation impossible for a normal human mind. Only Logicians could cope with the amount of data, and even among Logicians it required a lot of training to perfect.

Since Logician-navigators depended on their visual input to make their calculations, they would often get replaced as they grew old and their vision deteriorated, or they would get younger apprentices to do the visual confirmation.

Often ships would travel the same route over and over again, giving the Logician-navigator a chance to perfect his calculations, making it possible to do the route faster. Some poleis and even captains went to great lengths to protect these calculations from the competition, secluding their Logician-navigators from prying ears. On at least two occasions Logician-navigators were deliberately kidnapped for their knowledge.
