Shan State

Shan State is a Timeline realm covering the years around the new millennium, from 1998 to 2000. The realm focuses on one set of world-shaking events that the average citizen never knew about, in an area around the Chinese border with Burma (called Myanmar by its military dictators of the time).

Overview

     1998, and leaders of the West’s intelligence community gathered to consider their options. A grave threat to the modern way of life had emerged, and all the major powers of the world were creating covert teams to combat that threat. So extraordinary was its nature that it had to be contained and kept from the public at all costs.

     As such, the most trusted and best trained operatives were dispatched to keep enemy forces from coming to the public’s attention. Yet this enemy had tricks that other adversaries never had before. This threat was a supernatural one, with enemy agents infiltrating the whole world.

     Initially, the task of the counter-espionage teams was to hunt down and eliminate the werewolves, ogres, and other nightmares that found a way into populated parts of the world.

     By 1999, though, it became clear that the source of the problem lay in a remote part of Asia, and it was a much much bigger problem than anyone ever imagined. A full scale war was inevitable, to contain the enemy and the very knowledge that there was such an enemy. The Chinese committed the bulk of the front line troops. Other nations supplied specialist support. With the world’s media satellites carefully diverted away from the area, it became a full-on engagement of wizards against artillery, shapeshifters against infantry and, in 2000, a very angry dragon crunching its way through billions of dollars of tanks and helicopters.

     The main stages of activity in the realm split into three:

     1998, focusing on covert ops

     1999, going behind enemy lines

     2000, at the height of the invisible war
