Celestium
To the untrained eye, Celestium looks like a light-weight metal alloy yet stronger than any metal known to man. Look closely, though, and you’ll see intricate patterns of lines throughout its structure. Activated with
Pulse
, energy moves along these tiny channels, enabling phenomenal computational power at the sub-atomic level… many times more powerful than any silicon-based processor known in the real world today.
Celestium is actually a ceramic, created in magnetically-shielded kilns that created conditions hotter and at greater pressure than the heart of our sun. Without Pulse energy, mankind could never have generated these conditions, and the revolution in computing it led to.
In the Suzerain universe, Celestium is an invention of the early 21st century which helped shape the future of the world. Together with the discovery of Pulse energy, it ultimately led to the
Pulse War
and the start of the
Elements
family of
realms
. After the fall of the
Barriers
, it was Pulse-powered Celestium devices that finally took mankind off Earth to colonize the stars. This is where the
Catalyst
realms take over from Elements.
Celestium In Untamed Empires
When the Barriers divided the planet to end the Pulse War, each quadrant of the Earth developed a different relationship with the technology that existed before. In
Untamed Empires
Celestium was seen as a tool to give empires power over each other. Of the many mysteries of the
Ancients
, early imperial colonists of the
Setward Isles
were most interested in unlocking the secrets of the celestial metal. It was for Celestium that they’d set forth from the
New World
, and with it they would return – rich as gentlemen. Gold and gems were nice, but nothing made an explorer’s name more than discovering a heap of blasted old equipment from another age.
The following text comes from the notebooks of famed philosopher, social commentator and scientist Zachi Da Benecasa (Yr174 - Yr249):
Although called a metal, an increasing number of natural philosophers agree that the substance shares many properties with the ceramics of the Pharaoh Islands as well. How can this be, many wonder, when the material is several times stronger than steel and a fraction of the weight? Stranger yet, devices constructed with Celestium components just… work better. Many drowned marines will attest to the viability of
nautili
created before the invention of Celestium-lined purification bellows.
star shamans
and other spiritually aware individuals report sensing a faint hum like the boundless energy of far distant stars when Celestium-powered devices are working nearby. This has led to many people venerating the material, and just as many refusing to go anywhere near it. With so many questions unanswered, there’s no telling what that kind of power could do.
Although a large number of ruins of the Ancients have been found underneath the ocean’s surface, occasional
Artifact
finds can be stumbled upon throughout the islands. Rumors persist of a deposit in the mythological City of Kings that puts all other collections to shame, but that’s rumors for you. If it’s not mammoth quantities of the wonder material in a ruined city that no one has ever seen, it’s the local governor being replaced by his evil twin brother or a proposed grog tariff.
There are those in the Church of Trinity
?
who support Celestium use whole-heartedly, claiming the alloy to be the blood of martyred
Avatars
. Certain zealots have even been known to heap scorn and coarse vituperations upon those who are deemed unworthy of debasing such a blessed material. The
Varlinian Soke
certainly collects a lot of Artifacts, which disappear into the endless vaults under Napri
?
with relatively few Celestium-imbued items coming out. What happens to the rest, nobody knows for sure. Except for the Patriarch
?
, and he’s says nothing on the subject.
